Join local astronomer Kate Earl for a beginner’s class on the night sky. In this two-hour session you'll be shown how to recognise the well-known constellations, hear how they have been utilised by humans since the Stone Age, and learn tips on how to star-hop using the brightest stars. We’ll also spot the Moon, planets and galaxies through a telescope. 

Along the way we’ll chat about some of the strangest objects in the universe, as well as the importance of reducing light pollution for both humans and wildlife. The evening will mostly be spent outside, but at various points we will head to the barn to warm up and learn about some of the useful apps available that can help you enjoy the night sky when you’re back home. Please wear appropriate footwear for walking on damp grass and uneven surfaces. We also recommend you wear lots of layers to keep warm, and bring hats, gloves and scarves. If you have a pair of binoculars at home, feel free to bring them along to enhance your view of the deep-sky celestial objects we’ll be hunting for throughout the night.

Because the weather can be unpredictable, we have a fantastic "Cloudy Sky Alternative" ready to go. If the stars are hiding, we’ll dive into an interactive indoor session on the Solar System, featuring the latest high-res planetary imagery, and the rare opportunity to handle real space rocks that have fallen to Earth! We’ll keep a constant eye on the horizon, ready to head outside the moment a gap in the clouds appears.

Important Information - Please read carefully. 

    • Careys Secret Garden will provide a FREE self-serve tea station in the barn for guests to use. 
    • It is highly recommended that guests wear sturdy, warm, waterproof shoes as the grass may be wet. 
    • Guests should bring a torch as the ground at the gardens is uneven in places.
    • Children aged 10 and over are welcome to book onto the session.
  • Please note; it will feel much colder than the forecast suggests, so a hat, scarf and gloves are also highly recommended, as well as wearing many layers to trap the heat in (all this has been discovered from previous events). Standing outside for two hours can get very cold. 
  • This event will go ahead, whatever the weather. Please see information above relating to the indoor stargazing session. 
  • Tickets for this session are £20 per person.
  • This event is running from 6.15pm - 8.15pm, the gardens will be open from 6pm and all vehicles must be off site by 8.30pm when the garden gates will be locked.
