Join writer and illustrator Becca Perl for a thought-provoking afternoon. She will read
her kids’ picture book Don’t Look Back*, then give a talk about her family’s true story
that inspired it. There will be time for a Q&A session followed by the opportunity to buy a book and have it signed.
Don’t Look Back tells the story of little Anthony and his parents Peggy and Ladislav.
When they leave their house with just a small bag and Anthony's teddy bear it looks as though they are going out for a couple of hours. Yet they are leaving forever.
This is Becca’s family's true story of escaping Communist Czechoslovakia in 1949.
This secret book club date lands on World Refugee Day, a subject dealt with in the
book and one close to Becca’s heart. She has donated 50p from every copy sold to
the Refugee Council.
The event will start at 1.30pm for approx. 1 hour. Your Garden Admission is included with your ticket so you are welcome to explore before/after the event. The Book Club will take place in the Reclaimed Barn in Careys Secret Garden.

audience and will focus on the historical facts surrounding Becca’s family’s escape.

Becca Perl is a copywriter, food writer and illustrator. She won her first creative
writing competition at the tender age of 7 with a lively tale about a runner bean
family. A stint at art college only served to put her off art, so she went on to study
English at university. Her career in journalism started in Munich where she lived for
five years. Becca graduated with a Master’s degree in Creative Writing in 2012, and
the story she was attempting to write at the time was her family's escape story. Now,
a mere 12 years later, she has done it with Don’t Look Back. Becca rediscovered a
love of drawing during lockdown and has been happily illustrating ever
since. She lives with her family in Christchurch, Dorset.
